In the weeks leading up to Christmas, WCHS would like to honor our seniors! We will be showcasing seniors who are passionate about different clubs or activities within WCHS. First up will be Elizabeth Lopez-Ruiz, who is telling us about her experience in NHS.
"The great thing about National Honors society is that you get involved in projects around the community that you never even knew existed. Lending a hand to an organization or business and seeing the impact you made really is my favorite part. When it came time for elections in NHS, I didn’t have the desire to run for any position. I wanted to take a step back from leadership positions and just enjoy my final year. As the deadline approached I thought more about it and said to myself “Why not? I have the experience and qualifications for it.” So I did and won the position, and for that I’m grateful.
My interest in National Honors Society began back when my siblings were in high school. All three of them did not do NHS and so I decided to stand out and be the only child to do so. NHS has taught me to give back no matter how small the deed is. With such a tight-knit community anything you can give would be appreciated immensely, whether it be time, money, or talents. Even though our year has just begun, I’ve seen so much growth in not only myself, but others as well. I personally have noticed that I am quicker to take the initiative when volunteering and I’m more willing to go out of my comfort zone.
My main motivators so far have been my parents. They are extremely hard working, are always willing to help out in any situation and I can only hope to reach their level of service. What makes the NHS stand out from any other activity are the members. Anyone who has been inducted into National Honors Society are natural leaders, whether they realize it or not. They are individuals who have worked hard in their studies, on a team, and/or their community. They are individuals who strive for excellence and don’t settle for the bare minimum."
