Leesburg Elementary Students Gain Lifesaving Skills Through CPR Training

WARSAW, IN - Fourth through sixth grade students at Leesburg Elementary spent a morning learning lifesaving skills through a hands-on CPR training led by Lutheran EMS Kosciusko Division.
During the training, students were introduced to CPR techniques, how to properly use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and how to apply a tourniquet in emergency situations. The experience provided students with real-world knowledge and practical skills that could help save a life.
“This was an incredible opportunity for our students,” said Nathan Polston, principal of Leesburg Elementary. “We are grateful to Nurse Rachelle for organizing this experience and to our community partners who gave their time to train our students.”
The training was made possible through the support of Lutheran EMS Kosciusko Division, with team members Tonia Smith, Monica Combs, Noelle Brumfield, Cassie Roose, and Terry Brown leading instruction and demonstrations.
Additional support was provided by The Emerald Owl, who helped create custom Blazer CPR stickers for students. Leesburg’s specials teachers and student council also played a key role in making the event possible.
“I am so proud of all the Blazers who participated. They were respectful listeners and eager to learn this new skill,” shared Leesburg Elementary Nurse Rachelle. “This would not have been possible without Lutheran EMS Kosciusko Division. We are so thankful for our partnership and for teaching our students how to save a life.”
Following the training, families were encouraged to continue the conversation at home. Students learned hands-only CPR for infants and adults, how to recognize signs of a heart attack, how to help someone who is choking, how to call 911, how to use an AED and how to stop bleeding in an emergency. They will receive certification cards in the coming weeks.
